The Mothership consists of a group of Birthworkers of color based in Harlem, NY. We work together to provide doula services, childbirth education, lactation counseling, & family support groups to families in NYC. We are our community.
Comprised of Full-Spectrum Doulas, Lactation Counselors, Childbirth Educators, Community Health Workers, Nurses, Midwives, Massage Therapists, Yoga Instructors, Healers and more - we aim to provide support, education, and resources that will help change the narrative, emphasize and highlight the sacredness of motherhood, inclusive of all types of families. Whether hospital or home birth, we help our clients navigate the ins and outs of systems and processes in the medical industry, making sure they are heard and their needs are met. As community doulas, we often times work on a sliding scale and for free for families when necessary.
The Mothership is honored to be serving as part of Mayor Adam's Citywide Doula Initiative, working to protect & uphold respectful birthing care as a human right for black and brown families in Harlem, Inwood, & Washington Heights.
Racial health inequities stem from deep rooted systemic racism. Accessible doula care for all is a step forward in the fight for reproductive justice. We at The Mothership are grateful to be able to do the work, treating childbirth as the sacred, transformative, healing, physiological process that it is, while challenging the status quo and reproductive health systems in place.
In New York, Black birthing people are nine times more likely to die of pregnancy related causes than their white counterparts.
The researchers found that overall, people who have doula support during childbirth experience a:
- 40% decrease in the risk of Cesarean
- 15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
- 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
- Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average
- 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score
- 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
